Venue: Thripunithura, Kochi, Ernakulam district, Central Kerala.
A spectacular customary procession that marks the beginning of the Onam festival is held on the Atham asterism of the Malayalam month Chingam (August/September). Earlier, this was a royal procession of the king of Kochi and his entourage to the Thripunithura Fort, an occasion for the public to greet the king at close quarters.
Caparisoned elephants, a variety of folk art forms, floats, musical ensembles etc., are part of the procession.
