The Thiruvathirappattu , a song typical of Kerala, is a reminder of the days when Thiruvathira was observed as an occasion to celebrate womanhood. The song accompanies Thiruvathirakali , a dance performed by women to invoke the gods for everlasting marital bliss. To know more about the significance of Thiruvathira and to listen to some other varieties of the same see 'Thiruvathirappattu' .
This music clip beginning "Uthameeyam bhaminethan ..." is an ancient song which describes Sudhama's journey to Dwaraka to meet his friend Sree Krishna after years of separation. Sudhama, also known as Kuchelan, was a childhood friend of Sree Krishna's. Over the years a lot of changes took place in both their lives. Sudhama was married and had several kids and was struggling in utter poverty.
On the other hand Krishna had become the king of Dwaraka. This particular portion from the epic Mahabharatha is frequently used as theme for various dance and music performances in Kerala as the tale is about betrayal, its consequences, the strength of friendship and boundless bhakthi or devotion.
