EDAPPALLI PERUNNAL


Venue: St. George's Forane Church, Edappalli, Ernakulam district, central Kerala.



Location: Situated on the National Highway (NH 47) between Ernakulam and Aluva. The chief ceremony of the annual feast at this ancient Roman Catholic church is held on the May 3. The 9 day festival will have thousands of devotees flocking the holy shrine each day during the festival.

The church which has historical importance is believed to be built three centuries after the martyrdom of St. Thomas. Originally dedicated to Virgin Mary, the church later became to be known as St.George's Church. The church which is said to be one of the earliest places of worship for Catholics is known to have a number of healing miracles to its credit. The water from the well located in the vicinity of the church is believed to have healing powers.



The devotees carry back water from the well and soil from the churchyard after their visit to this church. Thousands of devotees from across the state and also from outside congregated at the popular place of worship to participate in the annual feast of the St. George's Church. Special rituals and customs like 40 hours long Adoration and 9 day long Novena, a massive religious procession carrying the statue of St George etc were also held as part of the popular festival.
